Ingredients:
- 1 tbsp. vegetable oil
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 small red bell pepper, seeded and diced
- 2 cloves garlic, chopped
- 3/4 tsp dried marjoram
- 700 g of ground beef
- 1 can (425 g) of tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoons of sugar
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp. yellow mustard
- 4 tsp red wine vinegar
- 4 hamburger buns, toasted
- Grated cheddar and/or pickle slices, for serving
Preparation:
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the pepper, garlic, and marjoram and continue cooking until the pepper is softened, about 5 minutes. Add the ground beef, increase the heat to medium-high, and cook, breaking up the mince, until no pink bits remain, about 5 minutes.
- Spoon off any excess fat from the pan. Add the tomato sauce, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, vinegar, and 1/2 cup water and stir. Bring to a boil, cover, and cook until the flavors meld and the sauce thickens slightly, 15-20 minutes. If the sauce seems too thick, add up to 1/4 cup water. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve the meat filling on toasted hamburger buns, sprinkle with grated cheddar and garnish with pickle slices.
